Vacation 2005

“The Cambrian cope with equal facility a repertoire ranging from Gabrieli to the Beatles.” Birmingham Evening Mail

BACKGROUND

Established in Birmingham in 1981, the Cambrian Brass Quintet is one of the most experienced professional Brass Quintets in the UK. With our two new members now on board, (Alan Thomas and Duncan Fuller) the quintet – with its new look – is set to scale new heights!

The quintet’s London debut took place at the Purcell Room, in London’s South Bank Centre back in January 1988, and since then the group has gone on to perform all over the world. Cambrian Brass has premiered works at the Cheltenham International Festival, The Salisbury Festival, The ‘Time of Music’ Festival in Finland and the Hafnarfjouror International Arts Festival in Iceland.

In recent years the quintet has also visited France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Canada, Bangkok, Qatar and Jordan. Their latest tour, to Singapore in 2005, included performances at the fabulous new concert hall in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

Cambrian Brass has a well-established relationship with the magnificently refurbished Birmingham Town Hall. They played their last concert there in December 2007 with the organist Thomas Trotter – to a sell-out audience of 1000 people! The relationship continues, with more bookings confirmed.

RECORDINGS

Cambrian Brass has recorded with Winchester Cathedral Choir, St. Chad’s Cathedral Choir (‘Music for Advent’ – released in 1986) and has broadcast on BBC2 and 3, and the BBC World Service. They have also broadcast for Südwestfunk and Finnish TV. CBQ are well known for producing special programmes, tailored to suit specific needs. They’ve appeared with Richard Baker, John Amis, the horn player Ifor James and organists Thomas Trotter and Peter King.

The Quintet is also in demand for concert performances with many choirs including the Birmingham Gospel Choir, St. Chad's Cathedral Choir, Chorus 2000 and Winchester Cathedral Choir.

The Ensemble’s recording ‘Debut’ was released on LP in the late 80s to great critical acclaim: “Lovers of fine brassmanship will find much to admire and to congratulate in this compilation from a chamber group of the first rank.” WINDS

And there’s a brand new CD in preparation – due out towards the end of 2008. Watch this space!
